Kids love animals, but my nose and throat aren’t quite as enthusiastic. I have rhinitis and pharyngitis, and when the air indoors is especially dry, pet hair and dander tend to make me feel worse. So when I first moved the Levoit Core 300-P we already had into the bedroom, my thinking was pretty simple: try it there at night and see if it helped me feel a little more comfortable.
At night, I kept it near my bed. After about a week, I noticed that when I woke up in the morning, my throat didn’t feel as dry or itchy as it had before. I’d only wanted to see if it could make me a little more comfortable, and for me, that alone made it worth using.
This time, I’m sharing both my own experience and the research I did while comparing different options. If you’re looking for the best air purifier for pets, I narrowed it down to eight models worth considering. Some make more sense in a bedroom, some are better suited to a large living room, and a few stand out for making pet-hair cleanup easier or doing more for lingering pet odors. Which ones are worth spending more on, which features probably aren’t worth the extra cost, and what might start to annoy you once you bring one home—that’s what I really want to talk about.

With all eight side by side, let’s narrow things down by the problem that bothers you most at home.
Which One Should You Choose? Start With What Bothers You Most at Home
If You Just Want One Good Everyday Option
If you’re choosing an air purifier for pets for a bedroom or a medium-size room, I’d look first at the Levoit Vital 200S-P. Its pre-filter can be removed and cleaned separately, and it offers a good balance of everyday particle filtration and pet-hair maintenance. After comparing the options, it’s one I’d be more inclined to consider as a well-rounded choice.
BEST OVERALL
Levoit Vital 200S-P
A balanced everyday choice for bedrooms and medium-size rooms.
WHY I RECOMMEND IT
✅ Removable pre-filter is easy to clean
✅ A good fit for bedrooms and medium-size rooms
✅ Balances particle filtration with easier pet-hair maintenance
WHAT TO KNOW BEFORE YOU BUY
💡 The pre-filter still needs regular cleaning
💡 If reducing filter-cleaning chores is your top priority, the Vital Pet Pro may suit you better
Lots of Pet Hair? The Real Hassle Is Cleaning the Pre-Filter
When I’m choosing an air purifier for pet hair, I don’t just look at how well it pulls hair in. I also want to know how easy it is to deal with all that hair once the filter catches it.

The Levoit Vital Pet Pro uses a clever automatic scraping design that pushes hair and debris off the pre-filter and into a collection bin, cutting down on some of the manual cleaning. You still have to empty the bin and check the filter, but you don’t have to start from scratch every time. If cleaning the pre-filter is one of those chores you really hate, this design makes the whole routine much easier to live with.
Still, I’d consider it because I want to clean the pre-filter less often—not because I expect to vacuum less. Hair on the floor and sofa is still your vacuum’s job. If you already have a purifier with an easy-to-clean pre-filter and the upkeep doesn’t bother you, there’s no reason to replace it just for the words “self-cleaning.”
LESS PRE-FILTER CLEANING
Levoit Vital Pet Pro
A practical choice if pet hair keeps piling up on the pre-filter and you’re tired of cleaning it by hand.
WHY I RECOMMEND IT
✅ Scrapes hair and debris off the pre-filter
✅ Pushes the collected hair into a removable bin
✅ More useful to me than another “pet mode” because it cuts down on hands-on filter cleaning
WHAT TO KNOW BEFORE YOU BUY
💡 You still have to empty the collection bin and check the filter
💡 Hair on the floor and sofa still needs to be vacuumed
More Concerned About Dander and Allergens—and Don’t Want a Noisy Machine
If pet allergies are what sent you looking for an air purifier for pet allergies, you can’t judge the choice by how much visible hair ends up on the filter.
I’d give the Coway Airmega Mighty2 serious consideration. What stands out to me is that it delivers very good particle removal without having to run at its loudest setting. Wirecutter specifically called this out in its testing and also described the sound as steady rather than the kind of mechanical noise that rises and falls. For an air purifier for pet dander in a bedroom, those things matter more to me than another flashy feature.
Its pre-filter also slides out from the side, so you don’t have to remove the entire front panel just to clean it. If the price fits your budget and particle filtration and noise are your priorities, the Mighty2 is worth a closer look. It doesn’t have app control, though; if you like changing fan speeds from your phone after you’re already in bed, you’ll probably prefer the Vital 200S-P.
DANDER & FINE DUST
Coway Airmega Mighty2
A strong choice if pet dander and fine particles matter more to you than smart-home controls.
WHY I RECOMMEND IT
✅ Rood particle filtration without running at the loudest speed
✅ The pre-filter slides out from the side
✅ Less disassembly when it’s time to clean the pre-filter
WHAT TO KNOW BEFORE YOU BUY
💡 There’s no app control
💡 If you like changing fan speeds from your phone after you’re in bed, you may miss app control
What If Pet Odors Still Linger After You’ve Cleaned?
If you’re looking for an air purifier for pet odors, I recommend considering the purifier and the filter together.
The setup I like best here is the Levoit Core 400S-P + Smoke Remover Filter. Even though the filter name says “smoke,” what caught my attention is the pelletized activated carbon inside. HouseFresh compared different filter options and also favored this higher-carbon version instead of simply going by a “pet” label.

I’d spend the extra money when persistent pet odors are genuinely a problem. The specified filter is sold separately, and the carbon layer and particle filter are part of the same unit, so you can’t replace just one layer. You’re not only choosing the purifier—you’re also choosing the replacement filters you’ll keep buying.
If there’s only an occasional hint of pet odor, I wouldn’t rush to suggest an upgrade. But if you’ve thoroughly cleaned around the dog bed or litter box and the room still has a noticeable smell, this combination is worth a closer look than the main unit’s description alone would suggest.
PET ODORS
Levoit Core 400S-P + Smoke Remover Filter
An odor-focused setup for rooms where pet smells still linger after regular cleaning.
WHY I RECOMMEND IT
✅ I’m recommending the purifier and filter as a complete setup
✅ The higher-carbon filter—not the purifier alone—is why it made the list for pet odor
✅ Balances particle filtration with easier pet-hair maintenance
WHAT TO KNOW BEFORE YOU BUY
💡 The Smoke Remover Filter is sold separately
💡 Pet-hair cleanup is less convenient than with a removable washable pre-filter
Large Living Room or Multiple Pets? How to Choose Between These Two
If you’re looking for the best air purifier for large rooms with pets, I’d suggest taking a look at the Blueair Blue Pure 211i Max and the Levoit Core 600S-P .
If it fits your budget, what stands out to me about the 211i Max is how much air it can move while still running at a relatively quiet fan speed. A living room is where you watch TV, talk, and relax, and I don’t want to put up with the highest fan setting all the time just to clean the air faster. Its outer fabric sleeve is washable, too. But you also have to accept its larger footprint and the ongoing cost of replacement filters—not just its performance.
The Core 600S-P is another option worth considering. It delivers high airflow and gives you an alternative if you’d rather avoid electrostatic-assisted filtration. The main thing to watch is pet-hair cleanup: the pre-filter layer is attached to the outside of the main filter, so you need to vacuum it rather than remove it for washing. The highest setting is also noticeably louder.
Here’s how I’d choose between them: if you’re willing to budget more for high airflow at a quieter setting, focus on the 211i Max. If you’d rather keep the purchase cost down and don’t mind vacuuming the outer filter layer yourself, take a serious look at the Core 600S-P.
Just One Small Bedroom? Don’t Pay for Features You Won’t Use
Then I’d set the bigger machines aside and look at the Blueair Blue Pure 511i Max and the Levoit Core 300-P.
The 511i Max makes sense if you want a compact machine but still like the convenience of adjusting fan speed from your phone and using an automatic mode. Its outer fabric sleeve is washable, too. But a small purifier should still be chosen for a small room—don’t let one very large coverage number on a product page convince you that it should handle an entire apartment. That’s simply not realistic.
The Core 300-P is more straightforward: you turn it on and choose the fan speed yourself, without an air-quality sensor adjusting the speed for you. If you don’t plan to use smart features, that simplicity can be a good fit. But if you want the purifier to decide when to speed up on its own, choose the 511i Max. Before you decide, compare the price of both the purifier and its replacement filters—you don’t need to pay extra for features you won’t use, but you also don’t want to forget the ongoing filter cost.

Three Things I Still Check Before Buying
Can It Handle Your Room Without Running on High?
At bedtime, I’d want to turn the fan down without wondering whether the purifier can still keep up. A model that only just covers the room on high wouldn’t leave me much choice. I’d rather have a little capacity to spare.
So I look beyond the big coverage number to the CADR (clean air delivery rate) and how many times an hour the purifier can filter the air in a room that size. I also count the space it actually needs to cover: an open living-and-dining area means both rooms, while a bedroom with the door closed can be considered on its own.
“Washable Filter” — Which Layer Can You Actually Wash?
Less fuss getting pet hair off the filter? That’s a feature I’d appreciate. If you’re looking for the best air purifier for pets with a washable filter, though, check which layer you can rinse. On the washable designs here, it’s generally the pre-filter or outer fabric sleeve. The main filter still needs replacing
For me, the convenience depends on how easily that layer comes out and goes back in. I don’t want a quick cleanup to turn into a project. After washing, let the pre-filter dry completely before putting it back. If the manual doesn’t specifically say a filter is washable, it stays out of the sink.
Make Sure You’re Willing to Keep Buying the Filters
A sale price can get my attention, but I’d look up the brand’s replacement filters before buying. I don’t want to be happy with the deal today and reluctant to pay for a new filter later. And with two or three purifiers, I’d be buying two or three sets of filters—not just one.
I’d happily pay more for a purifier that saves me hassle. I just want to know how often the brand says to check or replace the filter, whether the whole filter assembly needs replacing, and what the purifier costs to run. No elaborate spreadsheet needed—just enough to decide whether that convenience is worth the ongoing expense.
Air Purifiers Can Help, but Don’t Ask Them to Do What They Can’t
Catching Some Hair Doesn’t Mean You’ve Solved Every Allergy Problem
Do air purifiers help with pet hair? Yes—with some of the loose hair that actually reaches the filter. The fur on the sofa and carpet is still a cleaning job. Seeing hair on the pre-filter is reassuring, but it doesn’t tell you that the room is free of allergens.
Air purifiers can help with pet allergies by reducing airborne allergens, but I wouldn’t give up the bedroom cleaning or bedding washes. Allergens settle on fabrics and other surfaces, too. If someone has a confirmed pet allergy, try to keep pets out of the bedroom. And if symptoms keep coming back, keep working with a doctor rather than waiting for the purifier to fix them.
If the Room Feels Dry, Don’t Confuse an Air Purifier With a Humidifier
My throat felt more comfortable in the morning, but I wouldn’t take that as a sign that the room was less dry. The purifier wasn’t adding moisture. Filtering the air and humidifying it are two different jobs.
Before buying a humidifier, I’d check a hygrometer. If the room needs more moisture, use the reading to guide you rather than assuming more is better. The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America recommends keeping indoor humidity below 50%. That gives me something more useful to go on than how my throat feels.
Place It Where It Works for Both People and Pets
For a pet-friendly air purifier in a home with cats or dogs, I’d choose the room before the empty corner. Put it where you sleep, work, or spend the most time, with the intake and outlet clear of curtains, bedding, and furniture. Near the bed doesn’t have to mean blowing right at your face.
Give it a stable spot, keep the cord where pets can’t easily pull it, and follow that model’s wall-clearance instructions. One other detail from the picks above: the two Blueair models don’t let you switch off the electrostatic assist separately. If you want mechanical filtration only, I’d look at the Levoit alternatives.

How Long Should You Run It—and at What Speed? Don’t Leave Everything to “Auto”
Ten minutes whenever I remember wouldn’t be my plan. I’d let a properly sized purifier run longer at a fan speed I can live with. That doesn’t always mean the lowest setting: a slower fan cleans less air, and a larger room or dirtier air calls for more airflow.
Do air purifiers help with pet odor? A blue light won’t answer that. The Core 400S-P mainly measures particles, so the room can still smell even when its PM2.5 reading is low. I’d look at the filter setup and where the smell is coming from before deciding the purifier isn’t doing its job.
I’d rather buy a purifier that suits the room and that I’m willing to maintain than pay for the longest feature list. Don’t spend on large-room power you won’t use, but don’t skimp on airflow or odor filtration when those are what you actually need. The machine, the filter, and the way you use it all have to work for your home.
